Summary
Dental products with antimicrobial activity play an important role in the prevention and treatment of oral diseases. One such remedy may be gel with betulin, the effectiveness of which has been studied against a number of microorganisms colonizing the oral cavity.
The aim of the study was to research the oral microbiome when using the anti-inflammatory drug with betulin for the treatment of periodontitis The study was conducted as a prospective comparative clinical trial involving patients with periodontitis and healthy volunteers. During the study, the species composition of microorganisms and the multidrug resistance of the isolated strains were determined. The main group included 36 patients (average age 28 years, range from 22 to 38 years) with diagnosed periodontitis. Inclusion criteria: clinical signs of periodontitis (bleeding gums, periodontal pocket more than 4 mm deep, inflammatory process). The control group consisted of 32 healthy volunteers (average age 28 years, range from 22 to 38 years) no signs of periodontal disease or systemic diseases.
The results showed that the use of drug with betulin resulted in a decrease in the prevalence and abundance of bacteria that cause inflammation and slow healing, in particular, Staphylococcus epidermidis, S. capitis, S. saprophyticus, Actinomyces oris and Rothia dentocariosa. There was no decrease in the number of representatives of the commensal flora – Streptococcus salivarius, Veillonella and Lactobacillus spp.
The effectiveness of the drug with betulin in the early stages of use against the anaerobic component of periodontal microflora has been confirmed. A conclusion was made on the need for development of prolonged maintenance therapy regimens.
